Robert Smith served his country in the US Navy from 1967 to 1971, time that included duty in Vietnam. For his service he was awarded the National Defense Service Medal, the Vietnam Service Medal with three bronze stars, the Armed Forces Expeditionary Medal (Korea), the Republic of Vietnam Campaign Medal with Device. At the time of his discharge he had attained the rank of RM3, Radioman Petty Officer 3rd Class.
